This submission, produced by the National Right to Housing Network (NRHN) and the Women’s National Housing & Homelessness Network (WNHHN), outlines key rights-based data and concerns relating to housing precarity and homelessness among children—as well as recommendations to better protect and ensure children’s rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It outlines:
- How Canada’s ongoing housing and homelessness crisis violates articles 3, 16, and 27 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child;
- How to ensure all decisions affecting children’s housing, including eviction proceedings, consider and address the best interests of the child and the right to protection of home and family; and,
- The duty of relevant governments to take appropriate measures to assist parents and others responsible for the child in securing adequate housing.
