First 100 Days: Housing for People, not profits

Add your name to fight against the financialization of housing in Canada!

Canada must stop treating housing as a financial asset and treat it like the fundamental human right that it is.

We’re calling on the federal government to act urgently within its first 100 days in office—by August 6, 2025—to commit to the creation of a plan to address the devastating impacts of the financialization of housing and uphold its human rights commitments under the 2019 National Housing Strategy Act.

By sending this letter, you’ll be joining the National Right to Housing Network and over 50 housing justice organizations across the country to call on the federal government to implement the New Federal Government Action Guide, which calls for:

  • A reformed National Housing Strategy rooted in human rights (as required by section 5 of Canada’s 2019 right to housing legislation)
  • Real protections for renters including national rent and vacancy control
  • Major investments into community housing—public, non-profit, community land trusts, and co-op
  • Concrete, time-bound goals to improve housing for those in greatest need
  • Better data collection and dissemination to get the full picture of the challenges renters face
  • Increased investment into the Tenant Protection Fund to support tenant organizing and human rights advocacy and research

Why focus on the Financialization of Housing?

We know that the private market will never be able to bring housing costs down on their own because developers are incentivized to focus primarily on generating a profit for shareholders, not creating affordable housing—let alone deeply affordable housing for those in greatest need.

Canada’s new one economy genuinely must make housing more affordable—especially for those most in need. Without proper government leadership and intervention, private developers will continue to run largely unregulated, benefiting from Canada’s tax systems, and take advantage of the lack of required protections for renters.

With over 94% of Canada’s entire housing stock owned by the private market—we can see just how dire, widespread, and detrimental this issue is on our ability to create more affordable housing in this country.

For decades, governments have failed to regulate the private market and address the financialization of housing. We’re calling on this new government to take action now.
